Oxford Meta.

During the ten years that I worked as head of HR within a large multinational corporation, I learned that there is no off-the-shelf approach to addressing problems within a business. Leadership development, team effectiveness, working with conflict and developing individual potential must first start with forming a trusting relationship with open communication in order to identify areas for improvement and finally, build collaborative and customised solutions.

After moving from East London to Cambridge and then Oxford, I launched my business consultancy, Oxford Meta, consulting in a small and niche way. Doing a Masters in Change Agency enabled me to make a step change in how I saw my work. I can work at the level of the individual, the team and the whole organisation.

Qualifying in various personality instruments enables me to value and work with individual differences, something I love to do for others. I have trained in many business tools and ways of looking at individual and group experiences. This enables me to customise exactly to the needs of the business and its people.

I believe that virtue is a key value for a business to be sustainable; without it the world is not going to be a better place and neither employees nor customers, nor the wider world will benefit. I also believe in honest, long-term relationships, and always with business benefits in mind.

What do Unilever, Exane Paribas, Kraft Europe and Fremantle Media Enterprises have in common?

A belief in human potential. They pay attention to performance, and they understand the link between performance and relationship. Good relationships are productive in terms of performance and profit. When you feel good in a team, you go beyond what you need to do for the money.

Typical challenges that arise:

  • Conflict – through personality differences, access to resources, leadership style

  • New people on the team/ forming productive relationships

  • Lack of clarity from key people

  • New leaders: knowing how to motivate and enable people to be the best they can be

  • Change management: for example, moving from a national to a global team
